Understanding PDF Metadata
PDF documents contain more than just visible content. They store hidden metadata that can reveal sensitive information about the document's creation, editing history, and the person who created it.
Common PDF Metadata Fields
- Author - The name of the person who created the document
- Creator - The application used to create the original document
- Producer - The software that converted it to PDF
- Creation Date - When the PDF was first created
- Modification Date - When it was last modified
- Title & Subject - Document description fields
Why Remove PDF Metadata?
There are several reasons to remove metadata from PDFs before sharing:
- Protect your identity when sharing documents anonymously
- Remove corporate or personal information before public distribution
- Comply with privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA)
- Prepare documents for legal discovery
- Clean documents before publishing online
