IP WHOIS Lookup

Find owner, location, and network information for any IP address

Enter a public IPv4 or IPv6 address to lookup its WHOIS information

About IP WHOIS Lookup

This tool retrieves WHOIS information for public IP addresses. Private and reserved IP addresses (like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 127.0.0.1) cannot be looked up as they are not registered in public databases. Location data is approximate and based on ISP registration information.

Understanding IP WHOIS: A Complete Guide

IP WHOIS (Who Is) is a query and response protocol used to look up information about IP address ownership, registration details, and network allocation. Unlike domain WHOIS which reveals website ownership, IP WHOIS provides details about the organization or ISP that controls a specific IP address block.

What Information Does IP WHOIS Provide?

Organization Details
  • Company or ISP name
  • Contact information
  • Registration date
  • Network block size
Geographic Data
  • Country and region
  • City (approximate)
  • Latitude/longitude
  • Timezone
Network Information
  • ASN (Autonomous System Number)
  • ISP (Internet Service Provider)
  • Network range (CIDR)
  • Routing information
Security Indicators
  • Proxy/VPN detection
  • Hosting provider detection
  • Mobile network detection
  • Connection type

Regional Internet Registries (RIRs)

IP addresses are managed by five Regional Internet Registries worldwide:

ARINNorth America
RIPE NCCEurope, Middle East, Central Asia
APNICAsia Pacific

Common Use Cases for IP WHOIS

Security & Fraud Prevention

Identify suspicious IP addresses, detect VPNs/proxies, and investigate potential security threats or fraudulent activities.

Analytics & Marketing

Understand visitor demographics, customize content based on location, and improve targeting for marketing campaigns.

Compliance & Legal

Enforce geographic restrictions, comply with regional regulations (GDPR, etc.), and gather evidence for legal proceedings.

Network Troubleshooting

Identify network issues, trace routing problems, and contact the appropriate network administrators.

What is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number (ASN) is a unique identifier assigned to a network or collection of networks that share the same routing policy. Large ISPs, hosting companies, and enterprises typically have their own ASN. For example, Google's ASN is AS15169, and Cloudflare's is AS13335. The ASN helps identify who operates the network infrastructure.

Privacy & Accuracy Note

IP geolocation is based on ISP registration data and is not always accurate. It typically identifies the ISP's registered location, not the user's exact physical address. Location can be off by tens or hundreds of kilometers, especially for mobile and satellite connections. Never use IP geolocation for legal or law enforcement purposes without verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find the exact address of an IP user?

No. IP WHOIS only provides approximate location (city-level at best). Only the ISP can link an IP to a specific address, and they require legal authority to disclose this information.

Why does my IP show a different city?

The location shown is where your ISP's network is registered, not your physical location. ISPs often register IPs at their headquarters or regional offices, which may be in a different city.

What's the difference between IP WHOIS and Domain WHOIS?

Domain WHOIS shows website ownership and registrar information. IP WHOIS shows network ownership and ISP information. They query different databases and provide different types of data.

Can I lookup private IP addresses?

No. Private IP ranges (10.x.x.x, 172.16-31.x.x, 192.168.x.x) are not registered in public WHOIS databases. They are used only within local networks and cannot be traced externally.
